GOTHAM NIGHTS NORWAY

Gotham Nights was established in Oslo in 1995 and is Norway's oldest gothclub with regular clubnights on the last friday of every month.

Gotham Nights is a gothic club, but what is "gothic"?

The origin of the word is the Germanic tribes in central Europe that raised havoc for the Roman empire, even being a strong contributors to its downfall. The terms was later used in the Renaissance as a degrading description of the grandeur architecture that followed the romanesque period in the middle ages, namely the gothic architecture. Examples of this wonderful style are breathtaking cathedrals like Notre Dame, Amiens and Norway's Nidaros Dome.

The expression was later used in the Romantic period to describe the dark side of the literary genre, which gave us novels like Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"(1818) and Bram Stoker's "Dracula"(1897).

All this put together results in a mixture of pomposity and horror, and it is this we try to recreate at Gotham Nights using a lot of artificial smoke, candles and skulls as their holders. All this would practically have no effect if it was not for our audience complimenting it. People who usually visit our club are of all kinds, but have one thing in common: they like to dress up in their finest clothes Some wear velvet, lace and fish nets; top-hats flowing dresses and capes - it is like joining a funeral party from the 19th century, or a vampire movie! Others prefer a rougher goth-punk style, with tight jeans, t-shirts, Doc Martin boots and studded leather accessories.

The environment is no set for the most central part of the experience, namely for what is now known as Gothic rock. This musical style arose from the punk in the early eighties and is still going strong. Bands that are frequently played are The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission, Bauhaus, Siouxie and the Banshees and so on.

The club is being run as an idealistic club; all income will stay in the club, e.g. to be used when having live acts.

If this sounds interesting, come and visit us. Gotham Nights is located at Skuret Bar og Scene in Oslo. Anyhow, it is being held on the last Friday every month, and the age limit is 18 years. Cover charge is 50 NOK, a bit more when we have live performances.

Note that this club does not have any religious undertones, or "overtones" for that matter.

SLIMELIGHT ... LONDON

SLIMELIGHT.LONDON.
The Slimelight club (often referred to as Slimes by regular attendees) is the longest running goth–dark scene nightclub in the world.

It is an alternative music club which is open every Saturday (and on New Year's Eve) from 10:00 pm to 7:30 am (when the London Underground transport network starts running) with three dance floors playing music genres such as darkwave, EBM, trad goth, gothic rock, futurepop, power noise, synthpop, industrial, and noise.

It is currently located at Electrowerkz, 7 Torrens Street, Islington, London, UK (behind Angel tube station) where it has been in operation since 1987, though it had a number of other locations previously. The building was previously an abandoned industrial complex, and the Electrowerkz venue is also run by the Slimelight management.
THE BATCAVE

The Batcave was a nightclub in London, England at Meard Street, Soho. It is considered to be the birthplace of the English goth subculture. As one of the most famous meeting points for early goths, it lent its name to the term Batcaver, used to describe fans of the original gothic rock music. The term Batcave is also still used by Europeans to refer to Gothic music with a prominent Post-Punk sound and spooky atmospheres.

The club opened in July 1982. Originally specialising in New Wave and Glam rock, it later focused on Gothic rock. Ollie Wisdom, the lead singer in the house band, Specimen, ran the club with Specimen's Jon Klein as Art Director, and initially with the assistance of production manager Hugh Jones. Famous regulars at the Batcave included legends such as Robert Smith, Siouxsie Sioux, Steve Severin, Foetus, Marc Almond and Nick Cave.

A diverse array of bands would play at the club, backed up by their resident DJs Hamish 'the paranoid' McDonald and Annie Hogan (Marc Almond band member). The bands involved included electronic leading act Alien Sex Fiend. The host's band Specimen, who took ample influence from 1970s glam rock and Sex Gang Children, is a group that would go on to prove influential in the gothic rock, dark cabaret and deathrock movements. The club also showed 8mm movies in the old theatre and occasionally featured unusual cabaret such as Mr Swing the fakir. Much of the image and fashion used by the subculture can be traced back to the bands who played at the Batcave.

In 1983, a vinyl record entitled The Bat Cave, Young Limbs & Numb Hymns was released on the London recording label. The compilation included Specimen ("Dead Mans Autochop"), Sexbeat ("Sex Beat"), Test Dept. ("Shockwork"), Patti Palladin ("The Nuns New Clothes"), James T. Pursey ("Eyes Shine Killidiscope"), Meat of Youth ("Meat of Youth"), Brilliant ("oming Up For The Downstroke"), Alien Sex Fiend ("R.I.P."), and The Venomettes ("The Dance of Death"). The inside notes: "Look past the slow black rain of a chill night in Soho; Ignore the lures of a thousand neon fire-flies, fall deft to the sighs of street corner sirens — come walk with me between heaven and hell. Here there is a club lost in its own feverish limbo, where sin becomes salvation and only the dark angels tread. For here is a BATCAVE. This screaming legend of blasphemy, Lechery, and Blood persists in the face of adversity. For some the Batcave has become an icon, but for those that know it is an iconoclast, it is the avenging spirit of nightlife's badlands — its shadow looms large over London's demi-Monde: It is a challenge to the false Idol. It Will Endure."

In 2008 Specimen played live at a 25th Anniversary Batcave party hosted by Club Antichrist in London. The show was recorded as a live album Specimen Alive at the Batcave and released on Eyeswideshut/Metropolis records. In 2009 Specimen's Jonny Slut and Jon Klein appeared at New Yorks Fashion Institute of Technology following the exhibition 'Gothic Dark Glamour', which featured Jon Klein's 1983 'Pigeon Shit' DIY stage outfit alongside high fashion designers such as Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen. The Fashion Symposium acknowledged the Batcave as a major influence on current high fashion.
